Boating is deceptively easy. But as boats get faster -- and more popular -- a little training on regulations may be necessary to save the day. A safe-boating course is a quick investment in prevention. You'll learn rules of the road and water safety tips to take the risk out of your weekend -- not the fun.

Area Courses are offered by the local chapter of the U.S. Power Squadron, local boating and yacht clubs, and local flotillas of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.  You can even take an online course. Safe-boating courses are available for both powerboats and sailboats.

The Coast Guard Auxiliary will also offer a free, non-regulatory boat inspection, called a courtesy examination. Contact a local flotilla for more information.

In addition to piece of mind, an approved course can reduce your rates for boat-owners insurance. Talk to your agent for details.
